About Me

Hi everyone, welcome to Half the Sugar! I’m Michelle, the baker behind this blog, currently living in Massachusetts. I love skiing, biking, hockey (go Bruins), and of course baking! I started baking for my family when I was in middle school but I always loved to bake. During the fall, my sister and I would stand on stools and help my mom make the best German apple pie ever! My sister was always in charge of dicing the apples and I loved mixing the streusel topping. When it got to Christmas season, I remember helping my mom cut out tiny shortbread cookies and decorating them with red and green sprinkles. I owe my passion for baking to my mom completely (thanks mom!) When I got older, I started doing more baking on my own. Around that time, I also started to pay attention to having a healthier lifestyle so I experimented with different ingredient substitutions. My first step was cutting out half the sugar from most recipes that I found online, a trick that my mom taught me. Then I started learning about how to make adjustments to the other ingredients so that the recipe could be just as good as before. Now I focus on using healthier ingredients and finding ways to make recipes that are delicious and wholesome.

I started Half the Sugar in the fall of 2021 as a way to share my baking with others. After staying at home through most of Covid, I realized how much I love baking (especially since I love eating the foods I bake). More importantly, I love sharing my food with my family and others. My hope is that Half the Sugar will inspire others to bake amazing food that is also healthier.

Thank you for stopping by and happy baking!
